Mask Mixer
Overview
Your youth group will create, then wear masks and pretend to be
different Biblical characters.
Group Size and Game Time
This activity is perfect for any size group. Allow for
about 20 minutes time.
Supplies
Bibles, Books of/about Bible Characters, poster board, colored
paper, markers, crayon, glue, yarn, etc… (any art type supplies for
making the masks - the sky is the limit!)
As people enter direct them to the table with all the "art"
supplies. Ask everyone to use the Bible or the Bible
character books to choose a character from the Bible who might make
a good mask. Possible characters include Eve, Noah, Moses,
Deborah, Samson, Esther, Jesus and Judas (just give a few
suggestions). Tell everyone to keep the character they chose
secret. Have students use the supplies to make a mask that
best symbolizes personality or nature of the Biblical character
they chose. For example - an Eve mask could be red and shaped
like an apple, a Noah mask could be a rainbow with a boat, or a
Moses mask could be the two tablets with the Ten
Commandments. Encourage the students to be creative and have
fun.
Once everyone has completed their masks, come together as a
group either sitting close together or in a circle. Chose one
person for the group to try and guess "who" their mask is. Go
around the group one at a time giving each person a chance to
guess. Repeat around the group until each "person" has been
identified.
For the rest of the night encourage your students to stay in
"character". It should be fun to see who can remember and be
the most realistic for the longest time.
Want to take this to the next level? Here are two ideas…
- Combine this idea with a fall fundraiser or other public event.
Who wouldn't want their car washed by a bunch of oddly-costumed
youth, or their fall festival run by youth wearing Bible masks and
answering children's question about who they are pretending to
be?
- Playing an active game like dodge ball, capture the flag, or
even sardines, is ridiculously fun with masks on. Try it… you'll
see!
