We’ve all seen the news reports and heard the stories about the devastation caused in the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Ike. Thousands of people were overwhelmed by the destruction…many died or are missing, and thousands were left homeless. And with the current distractions of our world, many have forgotten about the tough times faced by the people impacted by Ike.
Our staff has just returned from the damaged areas, connecting with our friends and partners. And now, we can announce two locations for you to bring your youth group next summer...to serve at any one of seven weeks at each location.
WHO SHOULD SERVE: Hurricane recovery camps are ideal for people that are highly FLEXIBLE, have true servant hearts, and are willing to lend a hand in whatever capacity is needed at the time. Expect to be challenged and changed as you serve in Christ’s name.
NEED: Devastated by the Hurricane Ike storm surge and ravaged by hurricane winds, the area suffered extensive damage. Homes were ripped apart and boats lie high and dry. You can bring a new surge of hope and encouragement to the people who lost so much. Recovery will take years and your help can get these people one step closer to getting back on their feet…bringing your labor, hope and encouragement for the future.
SERVICE: As you can imagine, priorities change quickly and frequently in areas with such dramatic need. The specific job list will only be available a few days ahead of time. Yet, your meaningful service might include light construction, landscaping, cleaning and debris removal, painting, or something completely different. You can expect a longer work day and less contact with residents than at other camps—as our work is often in or near uninhabitable structures. As details become clearer, we’ll let you know. But please be prepared for late notice of tools and supplies that we may ask you to bring…realizing that the needs may have changed again once you arrive at your camp. Whatever projects you do, you’ll be on the ground, serving in the heart of the need.
SPIRITUAL GROWTH: As with all Group mission trips, our goal is to help you and your kids grow closer to Jesus while serving others. In addition to meaningful service, these camps will include worship times…still including music, interaction, prayer and stories from the day. Combined with daily devotions, it’s all designed to connect your service to your Christian faith.
